Happy Holidays fellas.
I'm sure debate will be hit or miss over the holidays, so I'll take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy New Year.

We'll most likely never agree on politics, but remember we're from the same breed of humanity (ok, all of us except JointPleasure) at heart once you strip away the borders, parties and traditions.

Happy Holidays.

Thanks ( I think ) lander.

The winters get really cold and the wind chill does hurt the bones. I'll be in Florida for a week thawing, over the holidays.

Hey, I'm readin' over here ...

Seriously, I am correct about the European subsidy process and its effects on prices ((which is why European sugar producers are consistently accused of 'dumping' in foreign markets) but I have been unable to reach any conclusion on whether or not the U.S. scheme is the same.

Lander,

Xmas excludes many people. I always stick to Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. Thank me later,

Angus

Phaedrus,

I believe the European sugar situation is the same as the U.S. It is heavily subsidized to keep prices artificially HIGH not LOW. They also dump some of this subsidized sugar (like the U.S. does) to f_ck up the true low cost producers so they can't compete. Europeans on average pay 3 times more than the world market price for sugar.

How much sugar can they grow in Europe anyways? Doesn't it require a little more warmth and humidity than Europe generally provides?

European subsidies are insidious, I remember seeing the conditions of a few of them back in Econ in college. Few are rational, they all are as blatant as W was in his steel tariffs. There is no apology for them, they are plain and simple purchases of votes.

WildBill,

I think the subsidies for sugar in Europe come during the refinement stage...they buy a lot of the raw sugar from third world countries dirt cheap and then get the government to subsidize the refinement process and then "dump" it back on the world market.

I'm glad GW reversed his position on steel tariffs...smart move..though the unions don't like it.

Lander and Angus,
Whats funny is I have been going up to people all weekend, and saying "Merry Christmas!!...You got a problem with that?"
As a goof on the PC left.
I was in DC over the weekend, to go to my nieces wedding...and everyone is proud she married a fine Irish Catholic bartender..named Aongus!Irish like to make sure the genes keep the strain pure, and are proud of it.
So to Lander and Angus Ont. Merry Christmas!!...You got a problem with that?
